Undergrad's public love plea sets Internet abuzz
Undergrad declares interest in girl by giving her flowers during lecture; videotaped scene grabs attention online
By Ng Mei Yan
BOY likes girl. Boy presents flowers to girl in a packed lecture hall. Girl is embarrassed and horrified. As the class ends, the students disperse, chuckling to themselves.
End of story?
No, this March 28 incident at the National University of Singapore (NUS) was captured on video along with the lecture that was being recorded.
Available to students through the school's Intranet, the grainy video has been downloaded and posted on the Internet, where it is now spreading like wildfire.
Some surfers who saw the webcast wrote about it in their blogs and included links to the video and to the girl's online journal.
People as far away as the United States and Africa have seen it and left scores of comments on the girl's blog, some encouraging, but most poking fun at or criticising one or both parties.
First-year Science student Gary Ng, 22, who presented the bouquet, told Gen Y: 'I have no idea why there is so much hype, but some of my friends just laugh it off as a joke.' The girl in question, a 20-year-old engineering student, said in her blog that she was 'ultimate grossed out' and 'traumatised'.
She also said: 'I think I'm on the verge of going berserk. But no point. Trying to think creatively about capitalising on my current fame. Merchandise?'
In her latest posting, she said she has removed the comments that others have posted on her blog.
'Too blown up,' she said.
There were rumours that she complained to the university about the lecturer who helped Gary plan the surprise, and that it had issued him a warning.
But she refuted this on her blog, and NUS has also confirmed that no warning has been sent out.
Gary said he got to know the girl through mutual friends and that she had made a deep impression on him because he liked her smile.
The idea of openly declaring his feelings crossed his mind 'a few times' but it was only after some discussion with his friends that he decided to do it.
'When we were thinking of doing it, we weren't thinking of the consequences,' he said.
His friends pointed out a 'nice lecturer' who could help out, and Gary asked Associate Professor Victor Tan for permission to spring his surprise during a break in the lecture.
Said Dr Tan: 'He came across as being sincere, and it was a well-intended gesture without offending the female student, so I agreed to his request.'
So when the time came, he told his class that he wanted to tell them a story about a boy liking a girl and flashed a PowerPoint slide, which asked the girl to hold Gary's hand.
Gary then appeared, went to her seat and gave her a bouquet of red and orange hibiscus flowers. (haha why hibiscus? :p)
The room erupted in cheers and applause, and the lecturer told the students to 'leave them alone'.
Gary, who had not dropped any hints to the girl before that he liked her, said: 'I was only hoping that she would accept my flowers.'
She did, and even gave him her mobile phone number, but later that night, her blog told a different story.
The girl, who declined to be interviewed, said on the blog she was embarrassed by the attention but was glad that her friends had stuck by her.
Some people think she is making a mountain out of a molehill.
Undergraduate Tan Ying Zhen, 22, said: 'It's just a guy professing his love for the girl he likes so what's the big deal?'
An American who read the girl's blog left this comment: 'Really, just grow up. There are far more mature ways to deal with this.'
Others thought Gary was foolhardy.
Undergraduate Ow Yong Hong, 21, who witnessed the incident, said: 'I think it's brave of the guy but it's stupid because it's not as if the two of them are nearly going to be together already.'
Added fellow engineering undergraduate Lim Ziqi, 21: 'I think it's rubbish. That moment of 'brilliance' made the girl pretty freaked out.'
Counsellors were not surprised by the amount of talk generated.
'People may like to follow books and movies and think that such public declarations are widely accepted, but it is not so in the Asian context,' said Dr Brian Yeo, consultant psychiatrist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
'It is better to take things step by step and know the girl better in the group setting first.'
But Gary said he has no regrets.
'It just felt like the right thing to do at that point of time and I never regret any decisions I make,' he said.
He still thinks he may get the girl and added: 'I may give her a call when things cool down.'
Embarrassing or endearing?
'I would be freaked out and totally embarrassed.'- LINUS CHAN, 16, Secondary 4 student
'I would be touched because it would take a lot for a guy to do something like that...'
- SALLY LEE, 19, undergraduate
'I would ignore him and then put the matter aside.'
- JASON CHUA, 18, JC student
'I would be flattered that he mustered up the courage to do that in front of hundreds of people, but also a little embarrassed...'
- CATHERINE LOW, 22, undergraduate in Britain
